The Jack Russell Terrier

MEMBER OF MY FAMILY

What would I do without you,
My precious Furry Friend?
Part mischief, but all blessing,
and faithful to the end!

You look at me with eyes of love,
You never hold a grudge,
You think I'm far too wonderful
To criticize or judge.

It seems your greatest joy in life
Is being close to me,
I think God knew how comforting
Your warm, soft fur would be.

I know you think you're human,
But I'm glad it isn't true,
The world would be a nicer place
If folks were more like you.

A few short years are all we have,
One day we'll have to part,
But you, my pet, will always have
A place within my heart.

~Author Unknown~

Find me a Doberman, I'll cut him to size --
And tear him to pieces, in front of your eyes!
I'm cocksure and bossy, the King of the patch,
Bring on your Alsatian, it can't be a match!

I'm a dirty street fighter, my language is foul,
I'll fight to the death, never throw in the towel.
Don't step near my missus, don't push me too far,
Get right off my pavement, take your hands off my car.

And when she's alone, I sit on her knee,
She knows she's quite safe, relying on me.
Don't walk by my lorry, when I'm at a show,
When I'm guarding my ponies, I'm lethal you know.

I'll follow a fox, to the depths of his lair,
But I like creature comforts, get out of my chair!
I'll not walk at heel, or sit when I'm told,
But I'm loving, protective, brave, loyal and bold.

My life is full of the moment, importance and bustle,
I know I'm the greatest -- I'm called a Jack Russell.
-- Diana Langford, JRTC of GB

The unique personality of the Jack Russell Terrier is capturing the hearts of many, but they are not a dog for everyone. The JRT was bred to be a hunting dog and city, apartment or confined, sedate lifestyles do not meet the needs of this feisty little terrier. These dogs require an extraordinary amount of exercise, outdoor activity and human attention.

They must receive firm, consistent training and their owners need to understand they can be bold to a fault. JRT'S can be very aggressive with other dogs and, because they are a hunting dog, should not be trusted with other small animals such as cats, ferrets, gerbils, guinea pigs, etc. I would strongly encourage anyone considering the purchase of a JRT to consult the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America web site. The JRTCA is very honest about the attributes of this wonderful little terrier. A Jack Russell Terrier can not be surpassed as a companion in the proper home.
